The House Oversight Committee on Monday requested information from several federal agencies<\/h2>\n

regarding the deaths and disappearances of at least 11 researchers with ties to organizations such as NASA and private companies including SpaceX and Blue Origin.<\/p>\n

Committee Chairman James Comer and Rep. Eric Burlison sent letters to Kash Patel, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, requesting staff-level briefings by April 27, Fortune magazine reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets,\u201d the letters read.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Comer, a Kentucky Republican, said he did not believe the deaths were a coincidence. \u201cOnce you see the facts, it would suggest that something sinister could be happening and it would be a national security concern,\u201d Comer said.<\/p>\n

He added he and Burlison were looking to \u201csee if we can put it together and find any missing links to try to solve what\u2019s going on here. Because it\u2019s very unlikely that this is a coincidence. Congress is very concerned about this. Our committee is making this one of our priorities now because we view this as a national security threat.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House officially acknowledged the pattern on April 15, when press secretary Karoline Leavitt was directly asked about it during a briefing. \u201cIf true, of course, that\u2019s definitely something I think this government and administration would deem worth looking into,\u201d she responded.<\/p>\n

Later that day, President Trump told reporters, \u201cI don\u2019t know. Hopefully, coincidence, whatever you want to call it. But some of them were very important people,\u201d adding he would have answers within \u201cthe next week and a half.\u201d He added: \u201cI just left a meeting on that subject, so pretty serious stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a post on X later in the week, Leavitt confirmed the administration \u201cis actively working with all relevant agencies and the FBI to holistically review all of the cases together and identify any potential commonalities that may exist,\u201d adding, \u201cNo stone will be unturned.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Patel confirmed that the bureau is investigating, telling Fox News\u2019<\/h2>\n

Maria Bartiromo: We\u2019re going to look for connections on whether there are connections to classified access, access to classified information, and or foreign actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

Patel then said, \u201cIf there\u2019s any connections that lead to nefarious conduct or conspiracy, this FBI will make the appropriate arrest.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement to Fortune, the FBI added it \u201cis spearheading the effort to look for connections into the missing and deceased scientists. We are working with the Department of Energy, Department of War, and with our state and local law enforcement partners to find answers.\u201d<\/p>\n

NASA referred Fortune to its first statement on the matter, which was posted to the X platform: \u201cNASA is coordinating and cooperating with the relevant agencies in relation to the missing scientists. At this time, nothing related to NASA indicates a national security threat. The agency is committed to transparency and will provide more information as able.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oversight Committee\u2019s inquiry has focused in part on connections to NASA and nuclear research programs, but its focus is on the broader commercial space and defense sector in which many of the individuals worked. Experts note that fields such as planetary defense and nuclear research are relatively small, with a limited number of specialists focused on areas like asteroid tracking, deflection modeling, and space-based detection systems.<\/p>\n

In March 2026, Blue Origin introduced its NEO Hunter concept, a planetary defense initiative developed in collaboration with Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology.<\/p>\n

The proposal is based on the company\u2019s Blue Ring spacecraft platform and includes technologies such as ion-beam deflection and kinetic impact systems, which share underlying principles with certain missile detection and interception technologies, noted Fortune.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
